In a statement, the car giant Nissan said that it had uncovered falsified data from car exhaust emissions tests at most of its Japanese factories.
Nissan said emissions and fuel economy tests had deviated from the prescribed testing environment and added that inspection reports had been based on altered measurement values, but that emission and fuel economy results were still within required limits on all vehicles.
Nissan says the erroneous testing does not affect exports. The carmaker pledged there would be a full and comprehensive investigation and that appropriate measures would be taken to stop any future recurrence. Nissan has not revealed how many cars were involved in the altering of this data.
The company also said it had rechecked reliable data and confirmed that all vehicles except the GT-R sports car conformed to Japanese safety standards. It did not explain why the GT-R had been excluded.
Last September, Nissan admitted unqualified workers had been carrying out final inspections at the end of production lines.
